The Adar Estate

The architecture responds directly to the site’s dramatic contours and existing landscape. Rather than flattening the terrain, the house is carefully positioned across two levels along the natural slopes, connected by a bridge. Large existing boulders are retained and integrated into the planning, becoming natural anchors around which spaces, circulation and views unfold.

The interiors continue this dialogue with place, drawing from the romance of Coonoor and its tea estates without adopting a conventional colonial vocabulary. Rich timber, deep greens and blues, patterned surfaces, woven textures and botanical references come together with a contemporary sensibility.

A defining element is the considered collection of antique and vintage pieces. Furniture, lighting, mirrors, old door frames and architectural elements were sourced through antique dealers and private collections, chosen for their craftsmanship, patina and individuality. Many were integrated into the architecture rather than used simply as décor, allowing old and new to coexist naturally.

The result is a home that feels rooted rather than imposed, where land, stone, landscape and history become integral to a contemporary retreat.
